Teacher Training
In a child’s experience, teachers are the second most important people after parents. Studio Xang puts great emphasis on the quality of its teaching and the continuous training of teachers and volunteers. Quarterly volunteer teacher trainings develop volunteers’ skills throughout the year. This year due to funding difficulties, we have not been able to organize our annual Intensive teacher trainings onchild development through art, teaching methods, child psychology, class management, basic art techniques for participants from other organizations. However we were invited by several organization to provide trainings, including one in Rangoon, Burma, for community volunteers.
In Maesot, two trainings took place recently. The first one on April 5- 6, attended by 9 volunteers and facilitated by the coordinator. We focused on identifying skills practiced in different art activities, clarifying teaching aims, evaluating these aims according the skills practiced and developing teacher’s creativity and engaging them to play. On the 13th march from 8.30 to 5pm, the Maesot team facilitated a volunteer workshop to practice the last 5 activities of the art course. 12 volunteers and 2 staff members joined the practice . The same regular teaching practice takes place in Chiang Mai.
In Mae La Oon refugee Camp, upon receiving new funding from the Global Fund for Children, two staff members provided a teacher training and conducted monitoring in Mae La Oon from the 3-6 of June 2011. The aims of the training consisted in supporting volunteers to start a new course at the beginning of the school year (June); prepare the opening of a 4th class for high school students; review what skills each activity aims to develop and teach volunteers how to evaluate the activities according to the teaching aims. The monitoring focused on supporting the volunteer team to solve problems due to old volunteers leaving for resettlement, help integrate new volunteers in the team; meet with Yaung Ni Oo School head master to share information and request permission to continue Studio Xang activities in 2011-12 and finally, meet with the school’s New Generation Student Organization to follow up on the use of donations from Sundorne school (Picture Pal project).
Studio Xang also organizes Annual intensive trainings on art and Child Development open to teachers and carers from other community based organizations. We are also able to facilitate training for other organizations as we have done in a few places in Thailand and Burma.
