Wings of childhood
"When he first attended art classes 8 years ago, he [the hero] could only remember his childhood as being on the run in the jungle. The animation is his first record of memories. The creative process itself helped him reflect and ready himself for the next journey. As a result, he now wishes to create another film to record the next 10yrs”
“Wings of childhood” is an animation film created by 3 youths who have the common experience of growing up in Thailand as migrant children from Burma but come from different ethnic backgrounds and circumstances. Two of them were part of the first group of students attending Studio Xang art classes. The main story is the true story of the narrator. The narrative is an allegory that mixes a true story and a traditional tale from Shan State revised by the authors.
The drawn elements were drafted on sheets of acetate and manipulated over an overhead projector. The image was projected in real time on a screen and filmed by a video camera. The authors wrote their own scripts and recorded the sound track. It was a very new experience for all of them and Studio Xang's first animation project.
Although the artwork itself was made is safe conditions, the experience of these young people were not always such. All suffered from discrimination, dislocated families. For safety reasons, the author’s names are not mentioned. Studio xang uses art as a tool for advocacy because it allows self expression and visibility without unwanted exposure.
This artwork is the result of young migrants putting their experiences and voices together. Due to their lack of status, migrant children around the world are mostly unaccounted for, have very little guaranty to basic rights and suffer from discrimination, precariousness and uncertain futures. However, they are children, and as such should be treated like any other child and their wonderful potential as human beings recognised as they grow up.
The film will be launched in November 2011 and will be available in Thai, English and Burmese on this blog for viewing.
